The G4FP represents Hyundai and Kia's current generation of turbocharged gasoline engines, which means demand for used units is only going to grow as these relatively recent models start needing parts.
Engine Overview
The G4FP is a 1.6L T-GDi turbocharged gasoline engine from the Smartstream G family, fitted in the K5 DL3, Sonata DN8, Sorento MQ4, and Sportage NQ5. It replaced older naturally aspirated engines in several of these lines, pairing smaller displacement with turbocharging for a balance of efficiency and power.
Why It's in Demand
These are Hyundai and Kia's newest mainstream models, which means vehicles are still relatively young but starting to accumulate the mileage where engine issues, accident damage, or major failures create demand for a used replacement rather than an expensive new-generation dealer part.
What to Check Before Buying a Used Unit
- Compression test results
- Turbocharger condition, since T-GDi units run higher boost pressure than naturally aspirated equivalents
- Oil consumption history, as direct-injection turbo engines can be more sensitive to maintenance quality
- ECU and wiring harness compatibility, since these newer models carry more integrated electronics than older generations
We test and document all of this before a G4FP ships — see our used engine grading process.
Middle East & Latin America Fit
K5, Sonata, Sorento, and Sportage are all current-generation models seeing growing adoption across both regions — as these newer vehicles age, expect demand for this engine code to increase steadily over the next few years.
